The purpose of our website is to record
the history of the British Merchant Navy so that information
about our maritime heritage is available for future generations.
The centre stage of our website portrays the shipping companies
and their ships but there are many aspects of the Merchant Navy
which cannot be catalogued so specifically. 'Did You Know' sets
out to record stories about the personalities and the ships
that do not have another home.
Pages 2 and 3 record stories about the personalities who, with
flair and determination, added colour to our Merchant Maritime
heritage.
Pages 4 and 5 record stories about ships which have made the
news but are not owned by any of our major shipping companies.
Page 6 The Merchant Marine has a 'lore' of its own. Here we've
gathered together some of these little known facts for a little
light relief.
The story of our Merchant Navy will never be told in full because
much of the history is hidden away in the dusty basements of
the companies or their successors and in the journals and memories
of the officers and men who served in those companies and their
ships.
